Checklist for Moving

When you’re planning to move, keep in mind that almost everything will take longer than you expect. The best way to keep on track is to plan ahead and stay organized.

  • Create a moving binder. Use this binder to keep track of everything, including an inventory of what you own.

  • Line up movers. Get written confirmation of your moving date, costs, and other details.

  • Consider where you want to put larger pieces of furniture in your new home. Make sure they will fit.

  • Clear out your closets. Be ruthless!

  • Pack items you won’t need right away. While packing, note items of special value that might require additional insurance from your moving company.

  • Start packing room by room. Clearly label and number each box with its contents and the room it’s destined for.

  • Transfer your children’s academic records to their new school.

  • Transfer medical records to your new doctor or obtain copies of them yourself. Ask for referrals.

  • Fill out change-of-address cards at the post office or do it online at www.usps.gov.

  • Alert the following of your move: friends, family, banks, brokerage firms, your employer’s HR department, magazine and newspapers subscriptions, credit card companies, insurance agent, and utility companies.

  • Make copies of important papers, such as birth certificates, passports, medical and dental records.

  • Get the utilities set up at your new residence.

  • Pre-order appliances, furniture, blinds and other furnishings.

  • Arrange for a babysitter on moving day if you need one.

  • Arrange to move plants and pets.

  • Get rid of items you’re not allowed to move, such as gasoline and propane.

  • Open your new bank accounts if you’re making a long-distance move.

  • Make sure you have enough medication.

  • Have your doctor write a new prescription you can fill after you move.

  • If your refrigerator is moving with you, make sure to empty, clean, and defrost it at least 24 hours before moving.

  • Separate valuables: personally carry items such as jewelry and important files and items from safe-deposit box.

  • Double-check closets, drawers and shelves to be sure they are empty.

  • Leave old keys with your Meadows Group Inc., Realtors broker.
